Hi learners,

you've likely heard about compound interest: investing even small money sums can grow into a substantial fortune.

The compounding nature of the long game also applies to learning.

“The more you try to do and learn things, the more you understand how things work and how to learn better. These insights and reflections are your compound learning,” writes Y combinator alumni Alexander Mistakidis.

Once you have an understanding about how things work you can use it to connect skills and ideas for your advantage.

Here's how you can unlock the power of compound learning:

  1. Determine what you want to learn.

What's the skill or topic you want to tackle?
  2. Identify how you will learn.

Where and from whom will you learn? Through podcasts, books, online courses, on-site training, or formal education?
  3. Block learning time in your calendar.

Where your attention goes, your energy flows. If you don't take regular times to learn and practice your desired skill, you can't improve.
  4. Keep a learning streak.

Don't skip your learning time twice. If your schedule was unrealistic, update it. Self-efficacy is important for sticking with your routine.

And that's it. You can choose every single day whether you unlock the power of compounding. Ignoring the choice is no excuse - because not choose is still choosing.

This article by doist is an excellent collection of time-tested strategies for learning. It includes techniques such as the Cornell Note-taking Method, virtual study groups, and a framework for how to design the life you want.

I've used many of the tools mentioned - particularly the ones around Life and career tips, such as 80,000 Hours and Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans.

🎯 Do you know your circle of competence?

A Circle of Competence is the set of topic areas that align with a person's expertise. Sahil Bloom explores this mental model and how it can be applied to your life.

“Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement. The same way that money multiplies through compound interest, the effects of your habits multiply as you repeat them. They seem to make little difference on any given day and yet the impact they deliver over the months and years can be enormous. It is only when looking back two, five, or perhaps ten years later that the value of good habits and the cost of bad ones becomes strikingly apparent.”
